2015 Year In Review – Daniel Corkery of House of Solitude and Goat Rodeo

This week Philly Sketchfest will be taking a look back at the year 2015 through the eyes of the writers, performers, directors and producers that make sketch comedy in Philadelphia a reality. Daniel Corkery has improved the quality of sketch in Philadelphia on multiple levels. His work as a writer and performer on Alley of Nightmares brought immediate attention to Philadelphia’s sketch scene with the show being accepted into the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre’s SPANK series and the 2014 Toronto Sketchfest. Fresh off the success of ‘Alley,’ Dan was brought on as a performer for PHIT Sketch House Team Goat Rodeo and quickly found himself contributing to the writer’s room. When asked, his peers unanimously agree that Dan is the smartest mind in the room. Recently, Daniel has taken his talents and applied them to animation creating sketches that serve as both web content and interstitial transitions for House of Solitude’s live shows. You can see Dan and Caitlin’s sketch group, House of Solitude, tomorrow night, on New Year’s Day, as they perform their first sketch of 2016 at our Sketch Hangover! In the meantime, please enjoy Dan’s look back at Philly sketch in 2015…

2015 Year In Review – Joe Moore of Dog Mountain & Guilty Pleasures

This week Philly Sketchfest will be taking a look back at the year 2015 through the eyes of the writers, performers, directors and producers that make sketch comedy in Philadelphia a reality. Joe Moore is the head writer of PHIT Sketch House Team, Dog Mountain, the host of the ‘Best of Philadelphia‘ award winning Guilty Pleasures, best friends with Regional Child Star, Chucky McMelonmeyer, and one our favorite human beings on Earth. Joe is looked forward to. On-stage, he pairs quick wit with earnest portrayals of a characters motivations or decisions, adding so much more to the words on the page and translating all of it through performance in a matter of seconds. In the writer’s room, he has an innate ability to both ask and answer the questions needed to break mediocre sketches and build them to something memorably unique and special. In total, Joe appreciates both high brow and low brow comedy, is devoid of hubris, brings people together and we are forever thankful for that. Whether he’s working on his own ideas or helping out everyone else, amazing things result from his involvement. You can see Joe and Dog Mountain this Friday night, on New Year’s Day, when they perform their first sketch of 2016 at our Sketch Hangover! Until then, please enjoy Joe Moore’s 2015 sketch year in review…

Sketch Comedy in Philadelphia – December 28th through January 3rd

This week marks both the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016. With that in mind we’ve decided to celebrate both the old and new with two shows on New Year’s Day, Friday, January 1st as part of our Philly Sketchfest Presents January showcase. First at 8:00pm, it’s the American Breakfast Reunion Show with special guests, Your Mom. Then at 9:30pm it’s Sketch Hangover, an outright cavalcade of Philadelphia sketch groups as 17 troupes perform their first sketches of the year to kick off 2016. While these are the only two sketch shows in town this week, a rumor we’re starting right here has it that there will be an announcement of substantially sized proportions happening right here at www.phillysketchfest.com regarding the dates of March 31st through April 3rd. Until then, join us Friday night and BYOB for the following sketch shows…

Before we start, we wanted to thank Jake Mattera, Alex Pearlman, The Wire Mothers, Cynthia Marie, Until Pluto and House of Solitude for an awesome and entertaining night of sketch as part of our Philly Sketchfest Presents December showcase last Friday. Please make sure to check out all these wonderful groups on social media to be updated on all their upcoming shows and video releases. In fact, our friends in House of Solitude are performing a set of sketch as part of this week’s only sketch show on December 23rd – Secret Pants’ 6th Annual Holiday Variety Show Spectacular at Johnny Brenda’s entitled, ‘Should I Sleigh Or Should I Go’ – and next week as part of Philly Sketchfest Presents, ‘Sketch Hangover’, a sketch comedy revue featuring 17 sketch groups performing their first sketches of the New Year 2016 on January 1st. But this week, it’s all about Secret Pants and their annual holiday variety show…

Q & A – Daniel Corkery & Caitlin Weigel of House of Solitude

House of Solitude is the sketch comedy duo of Daniel Corkery & Caitlin Weigel. Some might ask, where do they both find the time though? Dan writes and performs on PHIT Sketch House Team, Goat Rodeo as well as improvising with Triple Double. Caitlin improvises with two acclaimed groups, The Future and the aforementioned Triple Double, directs the PHIT Improv House Team, Outside Voices, teaches improv at PHIT and writes & performs with sketch groups, ManiPedi and Sketchier. Oh, and they have day jobs and a show this Friday night at 8:30pm with The Wire Mothers (NYC) and stand-up comedian, Jake Mattera as part of Philly Sketchfest Presents December showcase. We found a little room in their schedule this week to sit down with us to talk about their origins, if improv informs their sketch writing and some details on their upcoming show, ‘Home for the Holidays’….
