This week Philly Sketchfest will be taking a look back at the year 2015 through the eyes of the writers, performers, directors and producers that make sketch comedy in Philadelphia a reality. Aaron Nevins is so many things; a performer, host, writer, creator, producer and thankfully, a supporter of comedy in Philadelphia. As host of the interactive talk show, Hang On! he enabled audiences to share status with his guest comedians to hilarious and unexpected results. Along with his production partner Kate Banford, he introduced Philadelphia to Five Dollar Comedy Week, a low cost, high-concept week of comedy shows that begat their latest endeavor, Good Good Comedy. With productions that take place across the cities venues such as Plays & Players Theater, Underground Arts, Vox Populi and PhilaMOCA, there are now more opportunities for sketch comedians to perform their material in Philadelphia and for that, we are thankful. In Aaron’s review of sketch comedy in 2015, one show in particular group from The Incredible Shrinking Matt & Jacquie stood out for him. You can see Matt & Jacquie this Friday night, on New Year’s Day, when they perform their first sketch of 2016 at our Sketch Hangover! This week is so full of sketch comedy shows in Philadelphia that it’s almost as if – Christmas came early/Hanukkah was extended/the Krampus didn’t bite off the appendages of your misbehaving child – this year. But before you get upset that I only noted the Christian, Jewish and Pagen gift giving holidays as metaphors… What’s that? It’s too late and you’re already upset? Okay, then we’ll just get to this week’s listings of sketch comedy in Philadelphia which features our own monthly Philly Sketchfest Presents showcases at The Adrienne Theater Playground including House of Solitude’s ‘Home for the Holidays’ featuring The Wire Mothers and host Jake Mattera at 8:30pm as well as Until Pluto’s “…Still Not A Better World” featuring Cynthia Marie’s Farewell Show and host Alex Pearlman at 10:00pm.
Before we get started though, don’t forget to congratulate PHIT Sketch House Team, Dog Mountain who have been accepted into the 2016 North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival!
While some of you might be lamenting that it’s already December, there is still a ton of sketch comedy to be had before the New Year (and our Sketch Hangover show on January 1st at 10pm). This week, it’s the return of Daring Daulton, The Prince and an anthology of sketches inspired by Start Wars from new duo, Wretched Hive (Jack O’Keeffe and Gab Thom).
It’s the week of Thanksgiving and we have a lot of people to thank for all they did to make our Philly Sketchfest Presents November showcase such a success including performers Sweetish, Trout House (NYC), Eddie Finn, all the groups that took part in The Dirtiest Sketch in Philadelphia (editors note – check out the link for all the info including who won by clicking here), and last but certainly not least, Cynthia-Marie, Nicole Yates, Jaime Kelly and Dave Terruso. Now let’s get all types of informed for Thanksgiving Week including a camera-phone film festival and a 38-hour long marathon of comedy…
